UK TOP 10 SINGLES CHART W/E February 21st 1970

We have three new entries in this week’s top 10 chart.
Making way for the newcomers are Badfinger, Marmalade and Chicago.
Badfinger will enjoy another two top 10 singles during the decade. Marmalade will be back four times. Chicago, despite being the biggest selling singles band of the decade in the USA, will enjoy just two more UK top 10 singles during the seventies, along with two further visits to the chart during the eighties.
Edison Lighthouse manage to hold on to the top spot once again (and they ain’t finished yet).

UK TOP 10 SINGLES CHART W/E February 14th 1970

There are two new entries in the top ten chart once again this week. Making way for this week’s two newcomers are Kenny Rogers and Arrival.
Kenny will be back once more during the seventies with his first of two UK number one singles. For Arrival though it’s a fond farewell as far as the UK top ten chart is concerned. They did however manage one more top twenty hit with their follow up single ‘I Will Survive’ which peaked at number sixteen in June 1970.
There’s no change at the top this week which means that Edison Lighthouse enjoy their third…

UK TOP 10 SINGLES CHART W/E February 7th 1970

Elvis Presley and Bobbie Gentry make way for this week’s two new entries in the UK top ten single’s chart. For Bobbie Gentry it was to be a fond farewell. Her follow-up single ‘Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head’ did manage to crawl up to number 40 three weeks later, but other than that, Bobbie was never seen in the UK singles chart again.
Elvis Presley on the other hand will enjoy another eighteen visits to the top ten before his untimely death in 1977.
The top three singles in this week’s chart are all non-movers. This means that one hit wonders…

UK TOP 10 SINGLES CHART W/E January 31st 1970

Okay! I’ve decided early on in this project that doing the full top 20 singles charts for the whole of the seventies is probably going to take a little longer than my mortal lifespan will allow. So from this week forward I’m gonna stick to top ten charts instead.
Sorry about that.
This week we see the first ‘new’ number one single of the seventies. Shooting in from nowhere, Edison Lighthouse are the act to finally topple Rolf Harris from the top spot.
As mentioned last week, Edison Lighthouse were a studio band consisting of session musicians and fronted by vocalist Tony Burrows.
Although…

Rolf Harris enjoys his sixth and final week at number 1. One Hit Wonders Delaney And Bonnie and Friends re-enter the top 20 for their very last appearance (so far) in the UK Singles Chart. The highest new entry this week comes courtesy of another One Hit Wonder act, Edison Lighthouse. Though it must be said that their one hit will enjoy much more success than Delaney and Bonnie’s offering.

Rolf Harris hangs on to the top spot for an impressive fifth week. Paul McCartney provides Badfinger with their first UK hit with his very Beatles-esque composition ‘Come And Get It’.

UK TOP 20 SINGLES CHART W/E January 10th 1970

Rolf Harris is still sitting comfortably at the top spot this week. The Beatles re-enter the charts with their penultimate (excluding re-issues) UK single ‘Something.’ A beautiful ballad which happens to be the only George Harrison composed Beatles hit single.

UK TOP 20 SINGLES CHART W/E January 3rd 1970

So here it is then! The very first UK Top 20 Singles Chart of the 1970’s.
There’s no new number 1 this week.
There are no new entries this week either.
Actually, what we have in this very first chart of the decade is twenty non-movers.
Okay, the fact is, there was no first chart of the seventies. Just a last chart of the sixties, again.
We’re talking about a time when a Christmas holiday meant a Christmas holiday. All the shops were shut for most of the week, and the people responsible for compiling the sales data that gave us our weekly chart were…
